Personality

Should a city take a personality test?

With bits in

Damm my blood chemistry!

One glass of (diet) orange in a few hours of a friends bar-b-que on a Saturday night, and I spend most of Sunday curled up in pain.

I was supposed to be cycling. I'm (sort of) joining the Fermoy cycle club mainly so I can do next year's Tour De Munster (August 2006). As it happens the Fermoy club would be cycling in Kanturk Tour, and the two tours cross and sort of meet up.

But no.

Believe it or not, I still have a dull ache now.

Polio, Cork and the adventures of a broken boy

"While researching this book I was repeatedly struck by the fact that few people in Cork or anywhere else understood the grim mechanics of the disease. They almost invariably assumed that it was the result of poverty and lack of development. The idea that progress, the development of clean water and sewage disposal might make people more vulnerable to a crippling disease never occurred to them."

The Polio outbreak of 1956 could point to the begining of the Celtic Tiger as health and hygene improved to such a state that kids weren't drinking dirty water, and building up an immunity to the virus.

This observation is part of "The Broken Boy" by Patrick Cockburn. Patrick caught polio in 1956 when he was 6. He made a considerable recovery, but not a complete one... ‘I cannot run, I do not drive and I have a severe limp,’ However he is reporting from Baghdad at the moment.

I've got to get my hands on this...

Larger than life Mo

The Right Honourable Dr. Marjorie "Mo" Mowlam (September 18, 1949 - August 19, 2005). She died this morning (I'm guessing near 9am, but the details will no doubt leak out during the day) [UPDATE. time of death 8.10am].

Tributes are trickling out also, however, of all the UK MP's she seemed human and humane. She reminded me of Nanny Ogg ""one of the people" in a way most political people aren't.

Dunnes Gear(y)

Jam Junior is on tonight, and Collie is playing. Personally I'd like to get the free CD being given out at the gig. I like Collie, but I think I'm a little too old for Jam Junior.

Rumours abound that The Prodigy are due to visit around the date of their Belfast visit (November 18). They release a "best of" in October. Well, they did break up so a best of album is not unexpected. What is unexpected is that it's coming out after they regrouped.

Where is the Mercury Lounge? I'm asking as Anto Yau sent out his e-mails, mentioning a gig in September there. No idea where there is...

Mark Geary hits Cork in October playing Sirus Arts Centre (21), An Cruisin Lan (22) and De Barra’s, Clinakilty (23).

And finally... on September 2nd John Spillane's "The Dunnes Stores Girl" get released. It might be interesting to see if Dunnes actually sells it.

And she's down

Discovery landed safely at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

And while there were up there, they took this Echer like shot.

Talking pants

Overheard ...

"So do you swing to the left or to the right"
"Mostly to the right"
"But you're a liberal. Why?"
"Well my left testical is bigger than..."
"I'm talking politics, not pants!"

My syndicate won in the big Euromillions draw!

yep. We won.

We didn't win the €115 million. No we won €9.
There's 20 of us.

It's hard not to spend all the winnings at once. In fairness, it's probably going to be used to buy the next ticket.

oh well...

Keep on trucking

Driving in this morning, a truck passed over the Mahon Point bridge. It was Universe Longhaul! OK it was just a truck painted to match, but somewhere in the city there is a sadder Transformers fan than me.

And so I'm Back

... from outer space, typing of which... The shuttle is off it's tiles and Xena(mania) is due to hit, or at least bump on to our screens as plannet 10 (when did Sedna get downgraded?).

I suspect that Xena was a joke which the media liked too much.

At the moment, I'm in a little pain havent bumped in to friends and ended up in the CorkPride celebrations on Sunday. Crawled home late on Monday morning (damm you sunrise) and had to crawl out far too early.

Still suffering the effects of a doggy burger I think!

Hopefully I'll have my mind working for rehersals for the Shandon Historical Tour on Sunday. (3pm Sunday 7th, on Church Street, but it's more or less the Shandon Bells themselves).

take care,
Will
